Poppin built its first school!
We’re proud to announce that we’ve completed construction of our first school! Built in Partnership with Pencils of Promise, Chicocab Pre & Primary School, in Guatemala, just opened its doors to students.

Chicocab Pre & Primary School
The majority of adults in this small community are day workers on the vast banana plantations on Guatemala’s Pacific coast. Up to 2001, the children of the community in Chicocab travelled up to 30 minutes by foot each way to the nearest school. Concerned by conditions of the road, the community began to work together to form their own school.
After several years of giving classes in a neighbor’s house, in 2005 the community was finally able to build their first formal classrooms. But continuing population growth has led to overcrowding. Before the Poppin school was built, three grades were receiving classes in provisional classrooms made of wood and sheet metal. Thanks to Poppin, Pencils of Promise was able to work alongside the communityto replace these provisional classrooms with three formal classrooms. Now, the students of this school have a chance to learn in a comfortable and secure environment.
